So below is a map of the USA in I believe 1860 showing a division between free states, slave states, and territories that were not states yet. And below are a map of the red state, blue state election result maps averages for 2012 election. Below is another map averaging the last 4 elections A map below showing the redness or blueness of a state in degrees. This is a link for a similar comparison showing a map of slave states, free states, and territories as compared to the map posted above showing average results of the last 4 elections. ortholife.co/slave-state-free-state-map/What this generally shows is that the slave states (the south) and the territories vote Republican while the free states tilt Democrat. The states in the (slave state) south where the Democrats can win elections are states with heavy immigration from Yankee snowbirds from the free states like Virginia, North Carolina, and Florida. The states in the mountain west territories that are competitive for Democrats are areas heavily settled by either left coasters escaping California or Mexicans escaping Mexico in Nevada, Colorado, or New Mexico. Thus I think that on a broad statewide level the United States can be subdivided into four cultural and political regions. The Union (the free states of the North) The Confederacy (the slave states of the South including Oklahoma as it is culturally southern) The Wild West (the territories of the mountain west possibly including Alaska) The Pacific States (California, Washington, Oregon, possibly including Hawaii) So, the point of this is me having a suggestion. Perhaps the people of these four regions needs would be served better if the USA was balkanized into four countries following these pre Civil War lines. Perhaps with our country so divided culturally and politically along these regional lines the denizens of these regions would be far happier being under democratic laws created by their own culture. If these "slave states" were independent than I would be living under a government and laws that would be to my liking far more than the current Union where I am saddled to Yankees and Left Coasters and their policies. It would also stem the tide of Yankees immigrating to my region and trying to change our values in a way that we in the south DO NOT appreciate in the slightest. Anyways, this is a thought experiment of mine.

I am a “Yankee” from New York but I will not be associated with the Progressive Liberals that inhabit the major cities. I agree the U.S should be balkanized into at least four regions. At this point in time currently though the political system looks more like an oligarchy than ever. I’d also advocate for political system changes.

How similar would you say the culture is in Upstate New York compared to the New England states? Upstate New York was originally settled by New Englanders and the burnt over district was the origin of a bunch of crazy cults like Mormonism, Seventh-day Adventism, Jehovahs witnesses, the Oneida cult etc. arising from the Puritan religious impulse as well as the Utopian tendencies of New England. Is it still similar to New England or have later arrivals altered it?

Is it still similar to New England or have later arrivals altered it? Upstate New York is quite similar to New England. Since upstate New York was settled by New Englanders as an extension, there is a shared cultural heritage. I think ethnically Upstate New York looks similar to New England but Upstate New York experienced a slightly different mix of immigrants. Upstate New York got a little less Anglos and Irish, and got a little more Germans, Italians, and Poles. But still similar ethnically. Upstate New York also includes the foothills of the Appalachians, with some Scots-Irish cultural influence you would see in Pennsylvania. I’d say there is a tiny bit of Canadian influence in places like Buffalo and Niagara Falls. There is certainly plenty of Canadian tourists around there with a shared love of Tim Hortons and hockey. While I have never came across Mormons there are some Jehovah’s Witnesses that annoy people. So they still have a known presence here. There are a lot of Roman Catholics and Lutherans. There is a different in accent in Buffalo Niagara Falls, and Rochester. People generally have a more nasally accent. The food is better in Upstate New York also. I’d also say the geography is a little bit more diverse in upstate New York as well. The very western parts resemble the Midwest rather than New England. Lots of farmland and countryside. There is also more Amerindian influences in town names. There is a presence of Mohawk, Seneca, and Iroquois tribes here. The people behave similarly, most people are a bit rude, especially in the major cities.
