If any user on here has researched their ancestry then what are some of the most interesting or unexpected facts you've discovered? Mine are listed below.
1. My ancestors owned slaves on my father's side.
2. I have ancestors that were Puritans back in the early 1600's colonial New England in Plymouth.
3. Many of my ancestors fought in the Civil War on the side of the Confederate States of America.
4. That my mother's (who was adopted) biological family came from Appalachia.
5. That my great grandfather on my mother's side had to leave West Virginia for Pennsylvania because he was too insufferable even for them.
6. That I have a few ancestors from the Isle of Mann.
7. That a notable amount of my ancestors were Swiss.
8. That I may have had an ancestor who fought in the American Revolution... but on the side of the British.
That's all I can think of at the moment.

I guess the only thing that 23andme and My Heritage agreed on was that a lot of my DNA is in USA. Which is confusing. My granparents or greatgrandparents or whatever weren't the first ones to leave Ukraine or any other family around then. Was just my aunt and uncle when I was already born. So like why's my DNA all over US so much?

I just thought of another interesting fact about my ancestors. A whole branch of my family, my grandmother on my father's side is almost of pure German and German-speaking Swiss descent. So the question is, how did a bunch of Krauts end up in the British dominated South? Well here's the story. When the South Carolina colony was first founded it was settled by slave-owning plantation aristocrats from Barbados. They came over here, brought their slaves, founded Charleston, and set up rice plantations in the inland swamps surrounding the rivers. They had only settled the coastal region called the Lowcountry at this point. The interior of the colony was still inhabited by Indians. Seeing as black slaves outnumbered the white population of South Carolina by a large margin and the Indians likewise were a huge threat the planters were worried about the blacks and Indians ganging up on them and killing them.
So their strategy was just to pit everyone against each other. The way they did this with the Indian tribes was through the sale of guns. The Carolinians would sell guns to Indians for war against rival tribes and to hunt animals for the fur trade. If the Indians did something they didn't like the Carolinians would stop selling them guns allowing the enemy tribe who they did sell guns to, to massacre them. Eventually, the Indians got tired of being mistreated by the whites and ganged up to drive the whites out of South Carolina in a war called the Yamasee War. The whites won the war and were able to drive the Indians out of the backcountry, however, they feared something like this would happen again. Thus, they decided to settle the backcountry of South Carolina with protestants from Europe to serve as a buffer against the Indians. The county where my German American family settled ended up being settled by protestants from Germany and Switzerland.
