THE MACHINE CAVE CITY
City 17 is a Machine Cave City. We render it as a 'Machine', and all it's citizens are conditioned cogs in its machinery. This applies to all citizens that remain in the City. There is the Businessman class of citizens who are to become the gears of the economy. There is also the Consumer class, who was also refer to as 'Drones'. There is the Artisan class, who essentially play no part in the machinery. They are systematically wiped out.
THE CITADEL
From our vantage we can see at its center a colossal citadel. It has sleak, alien architecture, and has been installed at the center of City 17 by a invading hostile race called the Combine. It is not the only Citadel; there have been many installed in other urban centers. The Citadels form part of a network of infrastructure with the purpose of exerting dominion and acquiring planetary resources. Via the installation of a Citadel, a City effectively becomes a nexus for the harvest of planetary resources. The creation of the Citadels the Combine are able to exert control over a planets citizen's. The Citadels provide the infrastructure for the establishment of false economies whereby social order is seized by a mechanism of monetization and debenture in which anyone entering the City find it increasingly difficult to leave. They inadvertently become a fixed gear in the Combine's resource gathering machine.
THE CAVE
The terms City and Cave can be used interchangeably. By Cave we make reference to the allegory of Plato. In our City 17, its occupants are routinely condition to believe that the City the inhabit is anything but a dystopia. The Combine. through mass media infrastructure like the Telescreens, present themselves to the citizens as 'Benefactors'. Those citizens that succumb to this view begin to commit themselves to the false economies and the promises of liberation made by the Combine. Each citizen is made to believe that despite their debentured state, they are in fact an important cog in the greater vision of the Combine. This however is very false as each and every part of the mechanism is replaceable if they prove 'defective'. Those that become stuck in this Cave are systematically turned into Machines; they become parts of the overall Machine that outputs work unconsciously.
But why do the combine go to such trouble to enslave the occupants of the earth? The simple answer is resources. The Combine see the earth and other planetary systems as being abundant in resources, which are rich for the taking. The enslavement of the human being within a mechanism or system called 'The Cave Machine' is the means by which they derive these resources for their own personal use or agenda. But why do the Combine desire the earth's resources? The answer is again simple; the resources of their existing home worlds are not sufficient to sustain their grand plans of galactic occupation. The Combine are essentially an advanced race amidst a sea of other advance races in the universe who are actively at war and competing for resources, and in order to acquire resources to fuel their huge war-machines these advance races seek out otherwise desolate resource rich systems, such as our own, to harvest. But in order to do this, we would imagine them to be a very advanced alien race or civilization. Firstly, they would need the technologies to be able to transverse across the continuum of space-time in order to scout for suitable systems. This would require them to have advance technologies to locate and hone in on resources and other adequately 'intelligent' life that they may convert into slaves. Considering the scale of the universe we would imagine this to be an very momentous task indeed, which a highly improbable outcome. Yet the mere existence of the City 17 or the 'The Machine Cave' is proof of pudding. They would also be able to create warp gates to transport across space their vehicles and infrastructure, such as the Citadels. On the grand scale of things one can imagine the Combine competitively jumping form world to worlds in their epic search. They would occupy resource rich worlds, and abandon others whose resources are about to diminish. It's much like relocating a base. One might also imagine the operation of the Combine to span across multiple worlds. And as we pontificated before, the adventurous thinker might also imagine that there are number other races or factions of Alien species, much like the Combine, each competing for the opportunity to establish CPU worlds. Its trippy, isn’t it..
