That it took thousands of years after meeting our ancestors, before the neandethals disappeared from Europe, tells us that it wasn't a simple matter of them being subjected to genocide. But had it only been a matter not being able to adapt to a changing envirionment, I don't think they would have disappered completely after having survived in Europe for 500.000 years. Neanderthals lived in small tribes, usually not consisting of more than 30 individuals, which would have been easy targets for the larger and better organised societies of our ancestors. Whatever peaceful coexistence that may have endured for some time, would easily break down once there is competition over scarce resources.

Eurasians have Neanderthal DNA, so I think the extinction of Neanderthals is not a simple case like; e.g. Homo sapiens genocided all of them. In my opinion, while some Neanderthals may be wiped by our ancestors, the rest of them were absorbed by homo sapiens tribes or they were forced to move to new lands and their migration led to their extinction. The interesting point is all modern humans have archaic human admixture (Neanderthals, Denisovans, and the others). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interbreeding_between_archaic_and_modern_humans

You can draw a parallel to what happened in the centuries after the Spanish conquered South America. There are very few native Americans left, but their DNA lives on in a good share of the South American population.

Good example. Not only South America but there are also some other similar cases. Migrations, invasions, inter-ethnic marriages could leave a big impact on targets.

Good show. Good narrator. And, I learned something. Proud to have Neanderthal genes.
