I met Duncan Hare when my daughter was in the first grade (she is now in her 30s). There is a giant conspiracy among the mothers to get the fathers to spend some more quality time with their first grade children, or else they will have to do it all. Guys come home from work and his wife tells him “you’ve got a meeting at the YMCA tonight”. The meeting is about either Indian Braves for the boys or Indian Princesses for the girls. It has an Indian motif, and there are standard things like the braves/princesses have to earn “wampum” (something like $0.25) from doing something with their dad (like making the bed, etc). The tribes are grouped by zip code. At the time, Duncan Hare was director of Performance Management for the IBM mainframes. He was in the Indian Princess "tribe" with me.
Duncan Hare said years ago (when I was a manufacturing engineer at Nortel): “Mike, why is it that Americans lead the lifestyle they do and the rest of the world doesn’t?”
‘I don't know, Duncan’
“The Italians have better style, the Germans have better engineering, the British have a better government and a more well tuned bureaucracy, and it is always cheaper if it is built in Japan, China or India. What do you think Americans have?”
‘I give up’
“They ship things on time”
‘Ship things on time?’
“Yes. While we still have things held up in Final Inspection in Britain inspecting it to what the designer thought the customer wanted, Americans are shipping something to get valuable customer feedback about what they will actually pay for. Americans are on rev 2 of the product based on that feedback. It is a mistake to think you ever get it right the first time. No one ever knows exactly what the customer wants the first time. By shipping things on time you can enjoy the high margin that a new product has. It all eventually becomes a commodity.”
‘Wow’.
I coupled this statement later with something the Russians told me – everyone in America is here because they or their forefathers didn’t really fit in where ever they came from, or else they’d still be there. It is why we are creative – because we don’t fit in.
Small business is key, because large organizations are not very creative (actually, quite communistic) because they have something to protect and are spending their energy on protecting it. Eventually, some of the small businesses become big businesses themselves.
However this whole dynamic has been broken over the past 10 years because there are no small businesses coming up. It is because of security and financing. I have the first part solved, and there is a solution underway for the second problem.
Without it, we really will remain a “Banana Republic” and become more so. It is up to us to become “the Land of Opportunity” because there is no force to change the direction.
You don’t have to travel very far to see what living in a “Banana Republic” is like. When some Mexican houses of rich people have a 20 foot cinder block walls around them topped with broken glass to keep people out, it leaves open the question “Who is really the prisoner?”.
