It seems that my life will be taking a direction which will require an improved understanding and need for linguistic information. I have difficulty understanding and reading linguistic articles and am seeking advice.

I'd say try watching movies with subtitles, and see if you can understand what they are saying. If you can understand most of the words, you'll be alright. It should also help you improve your grammar.

What difficulties are you specifically coming across? And you can always post something here if you need to with what you're reading

Good advice, I have learned more from encyclopedias and dictionaries than any other source.

As to further clarification, a great deal of job seeking has involved potential military linguistic work, teaching English aboard or education based. In my time getting a BS of anthropology, it was linguistics that was the most difficult classes and that remains to be true outside the classroom.

Are you fluent in many languages? Also I know some who potentially struggle with it. It's just genetics to how well you can do linguistics. I recommend constant reading to help improve this function. Shrug

It seems that my life will be taking a direction which will require an improved understanding and need for linguistic information. I have difficulty understanding and reading linguistic articles and am seeking advice. If you're good with mathematics then maybe it would be a good idea to try cryptology. While it may seem like quite an abstract discipline, the practice of it is essentially learning to not just understand linguistic rules and differences between different languages, its also the practice of creating rule sets yourself. Which can aid greatly towards providing insight with regards to the composition of words, alphabets and letters. Cryptology is nessesary to learn to understand quite a lot of languages. Afew examples being egyptian and mayan heiroglyphs and the elder futhork, the language portrayed to be Dwarvish in the Lord of The Rings, and the original influence for that collective aett. This avenue of study could perhaps even lead you in to computer science, where you would find a wealth of tools that allow you to visualise different data sets in your studies, and form conclusions in your upcoming research based on a larger foundation of cross cultural literature.
