"Double, double, toil and trouble. Fire, burn, and caldron, bubble." They're famous words from Shakespeare's 'Macbeth' but the list of grizzly ingredients is said to be a real witches brew, but does that really mean that ingredients such as eye of newt, toe of frog, wool of bat and tongue of dog were actually used in witchcraft? Seems as though these items exist, but in reality may have been used as grotesque code words to prevent others from replicating their brews and to keep magic within the magic circle.

[The creation of potions of different kinds was a common practice of Alchemy, a practice spanning at least 2,500 years which provided the basis for modern inorganic chemistry. Medieval cunning men and women employed potions widely in their folk remedies, as a type of herbalism. Over the centuries, however, potions acquired a reputation as evil, and a common image is that of evil, cackling old hags gathered around a boiling cauldron in which their potions are brewed (such as the stereotypical witches in Shakespeare’s play “Macbeth”.] witchcraftandwitches.com
Of course we now know that so called witches throughout the ages have been wrongfully vilified. From the Inquisition, to the Salem witch trials many people have suffered at the hands of those who sought to prevent enlightenment regarding many forms of science, medical advancements, and natural healing and wellbeing. The actions taken toward these various people was an extremely ignorant, wrongful, and evil undertaking. Those that were accused were innocent people who wanted to better humanity and those who were doing the accusing were actually the evil doers. Being that today we have a better understanding of who these people actually were, we can rightfully take part in there grand achievements. Wether its learning subjects such as chemistry in school, going to the doctor, visiting your local apothecary, or mixing up some home brew of your own, you can now enjoy the benefits of what these people worked for. Love Potion: [In a small pot, put one cup of Spring water, 1/4 cup grapefruit juice, 1 teaspoon fennel, 1 teaspoon vervain, 3 pinches of nutmeg. Place the pot on a fire, or on the stove in a stainless steel pot, and bring it to a boil. Sit before the pot with a pink candle, and concentrate on the man or woman from whom you wish love, chanting his or her name out loud for thirteen minutes. Remove the pot from the fire and strain the potion through cheesecloth. Add a bit of honey to sweeten the potion and give it to the one you desire. Be sure to prepair and administer the potion on a Friday night.] witchesofthecraft.com

As far as I know witches who casted spells usually did have ingredients like toe of frog, wool of bat, etc. I believe such things usually were for bad spells or for big spells like causing an earthquake. Spells for love or good fortune usually didn't require much. This is if my knowledge of them is any good anymore since it has been years since I read on this stuff.
And good point on the Salem witch trials. Someone could be caught doing a simple dance and it would be considered witchcraft then. I think all sorts of dancing was probably witchcraft for them. Also their rules of testing if the person was innocent or guilty was ridiculous. If I recall correctly, the person was tied up and thrown into the water. If they died it meant they weren't a witch but if they excaped then they killed them as it was proof to then the person was a witch. So it's like either way innocent or guilty you die by their rules. facepalm

Your probably right, certain concoctions may have had some pretty wild ingredients on the list. I know some products at my local herb and tea shop has some pretty extravagant mixes. Thankfully we live in the age we do now, like you said, everything was considered a heinous act, pretty scary.

Love Potion: [Fill a small pot with a handful of rosemary leaves, thirteen anise seeds, two cloves, three rose geranium leaves, a tablespoon of honey, and some grapefruit juice. Place the pot over a fire and bring the brew to a boil. Strain the mixture through a sieve. Add some of the liquid to a glass of wine or fruit juice, and then serve it to the man or woman from whom you desire love, or use it as an offering]. witchesofthecraft.com

I wish I met a real witch! A sexy one, and a very clever one!.. Witches are so hot as their weird potions! I wonder if she's a witch?
